Milton "Manny" Lefkowitz

Milton ("Manny") Lefkowitz, 88, of Utica, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica, following a brief illness.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY, but spent most of his childhood in Utica. He was the eldest son of the late Samuel and Zara (Newman) Lefkowitz.
Manny graduated from U.F.A. in 1943 and continued his education at Albion College in Albion, MI, Mohawk Valley Community College, and the Insurance Institute of America, Philadelphia, PA. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a B-17 navigator, bombardier and radio operator.
In 1946, Manny married his high school sweetheart, Helen Cohen, and they have been lifelong residents of Utica. Manny was an independent insurance agent and broker for over 48 years. He owned and operated Milton Lefkowitz Insurance Agency, which later became Lefkowitz Martin & Co., Inc., 251 Bleecker St., Utica. He actively managed the agency until last October.
He was a member of Temple Emanu-El, Utica, where he formerly served as Treasurer. Manny was a member of Moriah Lodge #958, F & AM, the Yahnundahsis Bodies AASR and Utica Lodge #47, F & AM. He also served as Ziyara's 92nd Potentate. He was very active in many professional and community organizations throughout the years, including the Utica Independent Insurance Agent's Association, where he previously served as president, the Tri County Independent Insurance Agent's Association, where he previously served as treasurer, and the New York State Independent Insurance Agent's Association, where he previously served as Director of the Board of Trustees.
In his spare time, Manny enjoyed playing golf and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife, Helen; his daughters, Susan, of Utica, and Billie (Trapani), of Manlius; his son-in-law, Lawrence Trapani, of Manlius; his grandchildren, Michael and Emily Trapani; his sisters and brother-in-law, Betty and John Moore, of State College, PA, and Elinor Kreigsman, of Seattle, WA; and his sister-in-law, Midge Lefkowitz, of New York, NY. Manny was predeceased by his sister, Shirley Rosenblum, and his brothers, Jay Roberts and Howard Lefkowitz.
A service will be held on Friday, January 10, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Temple Emanu-El, 2710 Genesee Street, Utica. Interment will be made in Temple Beth El Cemetery, Whitesboro.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a contribution in Manny's memory to the Ziyara Shrine Hospital Patient Transportation Fund, Ziyara Temple, AAONMS, 251 Genesee Street, Utica, NY 13501, or the Masonic Brotherhood Fund, c/o R.W. Ronald W. White, 317 Kingsley Street, Sherrill, NY 13461.
The family extends its heartfelt thanks to Manny's private caregivers, Rita Foley and Seva Zabeli, and to the doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists at St. Elizabeth's, whose care and caring allowed him to maintain a quality of life during his illness.
