Mr. Thomas W. Paul

Berne, New York

Mr. Thomas W. Paul, 62, of Berne and formerly of Herkimer, passed away unexpectedly, on Friday, March 13, 2015, while vacationing in Costa Rica.
Tom was born on December 3, 1952, in Herkimer, the son of the late Joseph Wayne and Caroline Fiala Paul. He was a 1970 graduate of Herkimer High School, received his Associates Degree from Farmingdale Community College, Long Island and his Bachelors Degree from C.W. Post.
Prior to his retirement in 2008, he was a supervisor for the New York State Department of Labor, Cohoes, for many years. Tom had a great passion for nature and was an all-around outdoorsman. He enjoyed many hours of hunting, fishing, hiking and the peace that the outdoors brought him. Tom played softball for many years and was an avid golfer.  One of Tom’s greatest passions was spending time in his garden and he was especially proud of his handmade garlic braids.  Another one of his life’s joys was making homemade wine and he took pride in each step, from the grape selection and pressing to the bottling, corking, and sharing.  Among each step was a celebration which always included family, food and friends.
Tom was truly a one-of-a-kind, genuine man. His love, loyalty and honesty to his family, friends and community made him like no other. The memories he has given to all of his family and friends throughout the years will always be cherished and never forgotten. Tom, your sense of humor, your demeanor and your personality made us all grow to love you and you will hold a special place in our hearts and minds forever.
Tom is survived by his beloved children; Matthew Paul of Vail, CO, Christopher and Denise Paul of Levittown, NY and Elizabeth Paul of Hatfield, MA and their mother, Colleen Phelan-Paul of Wantagh, NY; his granddaughter, Mackenize Paul; his brother, Jerry Paul of Bloomingburg, NY; his sister, Barbara Bouck of Denver, CO and his nieces and nephews, Jon, Dan, Tim, Doug and Michaela. He also leaves many longtime childhood friends in Herkimer whom have stayed very close throughout the years and the many friends and neighbors on Peasley Road in Berne.
Tom’s funeral will be 9 a.m., Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church, 229 S. Main St. Herkimer, where his Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Quy Vo, Pastor. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.
Family and Friends are kindly invited to pay their respects from 4-8 p.m., Monday, March 23, 2015, at the Daniel J. Enea Funeral Home, 5860 State Route 5, Herkimer.
