Dr. Dennis Maser, of Herkimer, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, March 3, 2016, in Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center, New Hartford, with his loving family at his side.
Dennis was born in the Bronx, the son of the late Emanuel and Dorothy Schild Maser. The second of three children, he grew up in Baldwin, NY, and graduated from Uniondale High School in 1969. He attended SUNY Albany, where he was instrumental in starting the volunteer ambulance corps. Dennis was part of one of the first physician's assistant classes at SUNY Stony Brook before attending medical school at Universidad Central del Este in San Pedro de Marcoris in the Dominican Republic.
After moving back to the United States, he and his family relocated to Herkimer, NY, where he practiced pediatric and adolescent medicine. He was very active in the local medical community, including acting as medical director for MOVAC, serving as treasurer and president of the Medical Society of Herkimer County and becoming the Chief of Pediatrics at the former Mohawk Valley General Hospital and Little Falls Hospital. This did not preclude him from community activism, as he served as a member of the Temple Beth Joseph executive board for over 20 years, fulfilling the positions of President, Vice President, and trustee. His private medical practice existed for 31 years and served up to three generations of families. He was very proud to serve the community and develop strong relationships with many of those he served and children he cared for before his retirement in 2015.
Dennis is survived by his dedicated wife of 42 years, Toby; his sons and daughter-in-law, Seth Maser and Martha Oldfield-Maser and Brian Maser; his daughter and her fiance, Cheryl Maser and Geoff Halwig; his brother, Ira Maser; and his nieces and nephews, Arieh, Daniel, Justin, Courtney, Alexis, Brett, Melissa and Jason. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister and brother-in-law, Robin and Stuart Gant.
He will be forever remembered by each patient he cared for, each child he helped enter the world, strangers whom he met while on-call for emergencies, his respected colleagues, his friends and the local Jewish community, and of course, his beloved dogs, past and present.
His funeral will be 1 p.m., Sunday, March 6, 2016, at Temple Beth Joseph, 327 North Prospect St., Herkimer, with Rabbi Ronald Kopelman and Cantor Kalman Socolof co-officiating. Interment will be made on Monday, March 7, 2016, in New Montefiore Cemetery, West Babylon, NY.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2016, from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at Temple.
Shiva will be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with minyan services at 7 p.m., at the family home in Herkimer.
His funeral arrangements and interment are with longtime family friend, Scott J. Pizer, for Jacobson-Pizer Funeral Chapel, Inc., 1123 Court at York Sts., Utica (797-9121).
