Jerry Weiss

Jerry Weiss, a forty year Clinton resident, passed away Wednesday evening, December 31, 2008, at the age of 82, from heart surgery complications.
He grew up in Manhattan and Queens and enlisted in the United States Army Air Force in 1944, where he trained as a ball turret gunner in a B17 Bomber despite a life long fear of heights.
After his honorable discharge from the service, he enrolled in Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY, which at the time was an all women's school but was accepting a small number of returning G.I.'s. He received a degree in Theater Arts from Sarah Lawrence and later earned his Master's degree from Teacher's College at Columbia University.
In 1962, he married the love of his life, Nancy Quint, at the Plaza Hotel in New York and they remained together until her death in 2004.
After acting professionally and teaching theater for several years in the New York area, he moved to Clinton in 1966 to accept a job as a professor of speech and theater at Utica College. He remained there until his retirement in 1999, directing over 50 student productions. He also acted in several productions at the Players Theater, including a memorable role as Foxwell J. Sly in 'Sly Fox'.
In addition to theater, his passions including skiing, tennis and tutoring elementary school children, all of which he continued to enjoy until his death.
He is survived by his son, Joshua Weiss, his daughter-in-law, Kelley Curry, and his grandchildren, Julia and Chloe.
Calling hours will be held Saturday from 2-5 p.m. at the family home, 106 College St., Clinton. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to any charity serving the arts or children in need would be appreciated.
